Dr Carolina Mateo-Segura Biography

C M-SDr. Carolina Mateo-Segura was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1981. She received the M.Sc. degree in telecommunications engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, in 2006 and her PhD in Electrical Engineering at Heriot Watt University in 2010.

During the first half of 2006, she worked as a Junior Engineer with the Security and Defence Department of Indra Systems (Spain) and after her PhD studies she joined the Wireless Communications Research Group in Loughborough University and Queen Mary University (London) as a Research Associate. Since 2011 she is a lecturer in Electromagnetism in Heriot Watt University. In 2006 she was a visiting student at Aalto University (Helsinki) and in 2012 a visiting professor in St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University, Russia. She has authored and co-author 27 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference publications. Her research interests include the analysis and design of frequency selective surfaces, artificial periodic electromagnetic structures and transformation optics techniques with applications on super-directive antennas, sensors and medical imaging systems. Her research has been funded primarily by the Joint Research Institute for Integrated Systems, EPSRC, MRC and BBSRC.

Dr. Mateo-Segura was awarded a prize studentship from the Edinburgh Research Partnership and the Joint Research Institute for Integrated Systems to join
the RF and Microwave group at Heriot-Watt University (2006) and an Industrial Secondment award with Selex Galileo by the RAEng (2012).
My research focuses on the analysis and design of Frequency Selective Surfaces, artificial periodic electromagnetic structures with applications on antennas (high-gain arrays and leaky-wave), and medical imaging systems.
